Hey Guys, If God gives me a extra 15 minutes everyday, I will ask him for another boon, please make me sleep that 15 minutes without any other work to do. This shows that how much I love sleeping but which I forcefully avoid due to my other passions like chess, books and friends. I would like to share with you guys an interesting event in my life from the past.
Lets rewind ourselves to 02-07-2008, I was playing in the Sort International Open,Spain as a representative of the Indian Sub-Junior team. The Indian contingent was wholesome of more than 20 with junior, sub junior boys and girls with the managers.
Before going into the incident let me say about Sort, its a wonderful town located in the province of Lleida,Catalonia its located 692 meters above the Sea and has a total population less than 3000. The image below is the aerial view of the city
It was the last round and as usual like every tournament the last round would be kept in the morning 10'0 clock on other days the rounds were scheduled in the evening so we had a relaxed timetable but on the last day the organizers have to conduct the prize function in the evening so they keep the final round early in the morning.
My roommates were Sethuraman, Shyam Sundar and the manager Vijay Deshpande sir we were put up in a self serviced apartment, Vijay Deshpande sir used to entertain us every night by saying ghost stories so that we will have a peaceful sleep in the night :), As I am a deep sleeper, I asked Sethuraman and Shyam Sundar to wake me up in the morning early so that we can be ready for the game. They agreed so but what happened then was a comedy with a happy ending....
Sethuraman and Shyam Sundar woke up in the morning at 6.30 prepared for their respective opponents and dozed off due to the tiredness without waking me up. There were violent knock in our apartment at 10.20. Everyone were startled as we were in deep sleep. When we opened the door manager of the junior team P.K.Gupta said "guys games are going on, it's only 10 more minutes to overstep the walkover time"(For non chess player's walkover is nothing but defaulting the match and the time for default is 30 minutes after the start of the game, but if you go within that time you just lose the time in your chess clock for which you didn't arrive on the board) The tournament venue was only a distance of 100 meters but we aren't Usain Bolt to run that distance within 10 seconds. We brushed our teeth and ran helter-skeltertowards the tournament venue. When we reached the tournament hall the time was 10.26 with only 4 minutes to go, now we have to find our respective board which took 2 more minutes to find.
Just think of our mindset if you go and sit in the board just before the walkover time with a unsettled mind, hungry stomach and less by half and hour in the clock and few surprised and funny glances by the junior Indian team :) but to all our surprise our room scored 2.5/3 that day, with I and Sethuraman winning our game and Shyam drawing his game. This was a day which we will always cherish throughout our chess careers. Signing off is Priyadharshan who wants to doze like Kumbhakarna.....
ooo...that was a nostalgic .. Need-to-be-cherished moment beautifully penned in:)
